KIUC Federal Hydro - Water is a Serious Subject
By Adam Asquith

Dear fellow Kaua`i residents.

My friend Jan Tenbruggencate recently wrote to you about the silliness of some of the discussion on the KIUC Federal hydropower initiative. Jan is a smart guy, devoted to helping Kauai move toward a better future, and you should consider what he has said.

Then you should consider the facts.

FACT - This is a Federal process, not a local process. KIUC, in conjunction with a mainland company, has applied for and received exclusive Federal permits to work towards hydroelectric projects on four of Kauai s streams.

FACT - This Federal process is so dangerous to Hawaii s unique water rights and native Hawaiian rights, that Senator Akaka submitted legislation in an attempt to keep it out of Hawaii.

FACT The State Attorney General s Office opposes this Federal process for the same reasons.

FACT All the projects proposed in the Federal permits would reduce water available for agriculture, either by volume or location.

FACT - All of the projects proposed in the Federal permits, with the exception of Hanalei, would compete with other locally proposed hydroelectric projects which are all compatible with our agricultural needs.

A NO vote on the ballot will mean we can develop hydroelectric projects which support agriculture. A NO vote is consistent with State policy. A NO vote is consistent with local custom.

Finally, there is nothing silly about an open discussion and sharing concerns about hydroelectric projects. It is about our water, after all. I am a taro farmer, and like all farmers, I take our water very, very seriously. It is the life blood of our work. It is what makes the land fat, or the land sterile. Like the kupuna from whom I have learned, I don t need to have a discussion about water under the auspices of a Federal permit.

If you are unsure how to vote, then please ask a farmer first.

If you have any questions, please contact me and I will provide you with evidence in support of the facts above.
